Supporting Northern Airports
As Minister of Infrastructure and Transportation I have made it clear that Northern airports are a key priority.
As a province we operate 23 airports supporting remote communities throughout Northern Manitoba. Many of the communities have no all weather road access. The airports are the critical link for everything from access to health care to bringing in supplies.
When I was first appointed Minister of Highways in 1999 it became obvious that our airports had been underfunded. There was virtually no capital and limited maintenance funding.
We immediately went to work to invest in our airports. We invested in runway extensions, improved navigation, new terminals and much more.
In 2010 we are now investing more than 16 times more in our Northern airports than in 1999! But we are not done yet.
Over the next few weeks and months I look forward to being able to announce further improvements to our Northern airports.
One thing is clear as Minister of Infrastrucure I will be ensuring that Northern airports are a priority for the province.
